so far so good?

A day later, and the compy is still working. I'm still paranoid all kinds, but... so far so good? I guess?

So I've been telling myself for a while that if/when I got the computer back, the first thing I was going to do was make and post the next dorrie story. I had taken all the pictures right before PC death, and never had a chance to do anything with them. And while I admittedly did other stuff at the same time, I did immediately set to making the story when we got home.

Though I'm still pissed off about the whole thing. You realize this means that everything is getting pushed back even more. So at this point, stuff that was supposed to happen in August, which then got pushed to October because of the box mix-up, is now pushed back to who-the-fuck-knows-when.

Anyway.

Here is the next story, which was actually the beginning of slightly more interesting stuff.

But wait, there's more!

See, I have a lot of free time at work. Especially at the Junior High School, where the main English teachers do all the lesson-planning and stuff. But I can't take a book in or play video games, so I've spent a lot of time writing doll story scripts. Except... I'm now way too far ahead of myself. Like... I've got enough to last me 2+ years. So I decided I have to stop.

But I was left still bored. So, since I didn't have a computer to make or post stories with, I decided to start writing out the next few episodes, like... story-style. As in, in prose form.

So I wrote out the next story, which is this one that was just posted above. But then right after changed gears, and thought it'd be more fun to write out my favorites of the older stories instead. But then before I even started that, I changed gears again, and have since started a new, [mostly] completely original story to write out.

tl;dr version: in addition to the photostory above, there's also a written version of the same episode.

Title: Taking Cuts

He couldn’t suppress his usual smirk as their person entered the room, talking to herself about the length of the journey between Japan’s capital city, Tokyo, and... wherever it was they were now. This was, of course, the same person who had packed him a box and left him behind, some months ago, when she moved to this faraway country. She had thought she would be able to have him sent over at her leisure, setting him free when it suited her, but he was about to show her how wrong she was. Nobody could keep a fairy locked away for very long; it was time this human learned that.

The familiar weight of a small vampire sitting in his lap was a comfort, though he would never admit it. Rook had an adorable face, and Luke knew that that, if nothing else, would keep the person’s temper in check when she found out what he’d done. So even though it had meant waiting around all day, he was a bit glad her foray into the big city meant this encounter would happen at night.

If she ever noticed them sitting there.

“And the last train is always so crowd-“

There. When the self-complaining cut off, he knew it was time for the fun to begin. Luke smiled with fake sweetness.

“Miss me?”

“What are you doing here!?”

“Nice greeting,” he responded to the expected query.

“How did you get here!?”

“We came in that box.”

“What box!?”

Luke’s violet eyes narrowed ever the slightest. “That infernal box you stuck us in six months ago. Remember? It got mailed here.”

“But… but…” their person fumbled. So lacking in eloquence. So un-fairy-like. “But I didn’t ask for your box to be mailed to me... I asked for...”

“For what?” Luke’s smirk returned, even deeper as the confusion on the human’s face cleared.

The dolls had been carefully packed in pairs, with each box labeled on every side. On their box was clearly written ‘Dolls – L & R’. Of course, Luke knew this, and knew it would be done; the person told them herself when prepping them for storage. Apparently she gravely underestimated the craftiness of a fairy.

On top of the box – the one side that had been left blank so that an address could be written, and the first place a family member would look when retrieving the box to be mailed – someone had written ‘Dolls - G & A’. Their person’s eyes widened when she saw the mis-label, and saw how not her distinctive handwriting it was. “You cheater! How did you-!”

“It was a simple matter of coercing someone into writing eight little letters after you left,” Luke answered while flipping his long hair back over his shoulder. “Since you told us what was going to happen beforehand, I had plenty of time to find someone and… convince them it would be worth the risk.”

“I don’t even want to know how you did that.”

“It’s exactly what you think.” He knew he was beautiful, and finding someone to sneak into the house and mis-label the box was a very simple matter of batting his eyelashes and wagging his ass in the right direction. There were plenty of fairies and others around, all willing to do a favor for a favor.

Their person uselessly shook her fist at him. “Bad fairy! Bad, bad fairy!” All she got in response was laughed at.

But the little vampire in Luke’s lap tensed and squirmed. “Are you mad...?”

As predicted, that’s all it took. The person sighed, melting at Rook’s constantly concerned and all-too-innocent face. “No... just worried about what Antonio’s going to do to me when he finds out he wasn’t shipped first.”

“I’m sorry.”

“It’s not your fault.” She threw a glare at Luke. “Really.” And Luke snorted in return. She continued, “And I am happy to see you. Welcome.”

“Oh yeah...” Rook’s continuous curiosity pulled him from Luke’s lap, and he went over to the room’s large window. From a nearby chair, he climbed to the window’s ledge and slid the glass pane open. “Where are we?”

“Japan,” came the answer.

“Japan...”

“Mm... Tachi’s home,” she supplied. “Even though he’s not here...”

“I remember...” His unusual eyes gazed at the curved-tiled rooftops and unreadable signs of the small city. “It’s pretty.”

“I think you’ll find most things the same, except the language. .... And I hope you don’t prefer blonds.”

Rook shook his head, while, unseen, Luke rolled his eyes. It should be a well-known fact that the vampire preferred black hair... with purple streaks. It made him smile again, even as Rook began to climb out the window.

“I want to look around.”

“Be careful,” their person told him, showing a concern she would never show for Luke. “Don’t get lost.”

Rook answered “I’ll be ok,” then disappeared into the night.

Fairy and human looked at each other.

“Bad fairy.”

“Oh, I’m hurt.”

Some time later, after the person had gone to bed and left Luke alone, the fairy took to exploring the apartment that was their new home. There wasn’t much to it – just a bedroom, bathroom, shower, and a tiny area that passed for a kitchen – but he supposed it suited one person just fine.

One person and seven dolls, now... that he wasn’t so sure about. Especially after learning there wouldn’t be separate rooms for each of them, just one large cupboard to share. This would be a problem once the others arrived. While Luke was happy to let everyone watch him in his funtimes, those times may be harder to have if glasses-nerd was going to be in the same room, nagging all the time.

He sighed, then continued his ransacking of the pantry. Rejected foodstuffs littered the surrounding floor, and he dropped a bag of... something, to join the mess. “Meh... Everything here sucks. The Japanese have awful food.”

“They taste funny too.”

The voice drew Luke’s attention to the small kitchen window, where Rook was coming in. The color in his cheeks and the small trickle of blood on his lip were giveaways that he had fed.

“Oh?”

“Not bad, just... different,” Rook responded as he moved over to Luke, immediately reaching out to cling to his robe. Luke kneeled down to put them at a more even level, and Rook blushed as the fairy leaned in closer to him. “Were you... waiting for me?”

“No,” Luke responded honestly. “But I’ve been sleeping in that box for six months; I don’t feel like sleeping anymore.”

“Oh...”

He ignored the hint of disappointment in Rook’s voice, and leaned in even closer, until his breath brushed the other’s cheek as he spoke. “You’ve got a little~” His tongue darted out, licking the blood from Rook’s lips.

The little vampire whimpered and clung to Luke’s robe tighter, pulling at the sleeves. “Will... will you share a bed with me!?”

It was cute, the way he assumed a new home would mean new sleeping arrangements. Too bad. “I can’t.”

“Oh...”

Luke put on a sweet, sympathetic smile. “I mean, I have to be able to come and go during the day, so I can’t share your box with you.” Then he stood up, taking Rook’s hand and leading him toward the bedroom. “But I’ll tell you what I can do.”

He led them to the far side of the cabinet, where the new box that would serve as Rook’s daytime tomb sat open. Taking an extra pillow, Luke laid down what would be his own new bed alongside the box, close enough that they were touching.

“I’ll make my bed right here next to you, so we’ll be together, even if we’re not together. Ok?”

“Okay~” Rook gave a shy smile. So easy to please.

Luke then sat on the pillow, leaning against the box, and reached out to put a hand on Rook’s waist. “Will you sit with me until the sun comes up?”

“S-sure...”

“Unless you’re sick of me,” he fished, even as he pulled the other to him. “We were in that box together for a long time, so I’d understand.”

“No! I... I could never...” Rook trailed off as he made himself comfortable, snuggled in Luke’s lap. A small hand reached up to grip a lock of the fairy’s hair. “I think she was mad...” he said quietly.

“She’ll get over it.”

“Maybe you shouldn’t have...”

“Oh?” It simply would not do to have his little vampire doubting him. “But I did it for you.”

“For me?”

“Of course,” Luke replied as he pushed the other back so they could face each other. He put a hand under Rook’s chin to tilt his head back until their eyes met. “You had just gotten out of a box, and she went and put you right back into another. How mean.” His already plush lips pushed into a pout.

“S-so...”

“I did it so you could get out sooner.”

“Really?”

“Really.” Gods, it was so easy.

Rook wrapped his arms around Luke’s neck, apparently pleased and convinced the fairy would go through the trouble and risk a human’s temper just for him. “Thank you.”

“Anything for you,” he answered. “No ulterior motives.”

“No?”

“Nope.”

Violet eyes flitted to the other side of the cupboard, where a figure slept under a thin, grey blanket. He could easily make out the shape of the figure’s long legs, thin waist, and broad shoulders. Silver hair fell lightly on the sleeper’s pillow.

Luke grinned into the curve of Rook’s neck.

“None at all...”

How was that?
