I finally get a whole weekend off!

So of course I'm sicker than fuck.

Have some ZukaBe, I hope you feel better ;_;

“Look,” Shishido was saying, arm flailing in the ether while Tezuka stared on without the least bit of sympathy, “all I’m saying is he’s getting to be impossible and it would be nice if you could just visit once in a while so he’s not taking it out all on us.”

The he Shishido had been ranting about for the past five minutes, of course, was none other than Atobe Keigo. From what Tezuka could surmise between Shishido’s yelling and Ohtori’s shushing and the rest of the Hyoutei Regulars line up’s smirking, was that Atobe has come down with the flu. But instead of resting at home as a sane, normal person would, the Hyoutei captain had insisted on running the team through drills, while coughing his orders at unsuspecting first years.

“And bring chicken soup while you’re at it,” Oshitari interjected as Shishido was shushed once more by Ohtori. “Between the broth and the bones, surely it’ll keep his mouth occupied long enough that he doesn’t start spewing again.”

“He means spewing words,” Mukahi elaborated as he picked up the thread of conversation. “I know he thinks he’s doing the club a favor, but right now he’s not really making sense unless ‘twenty rounds or pumpkin pizza pie’ has some special code meaning to you that we’re not getting.”

It did, but Tezuka wasn’t about to admit that to the Hyoutei Regulars. It also involved whipped cream, an open range, and a call to the fire department with profuse apologies, but that was neither here nor there. What was here was the Hyoutei tennis team hounding Tezuka for a visit. What they hoped he could accomplish, Tezuka didn’t know.

He’d said as much, protesting that if Atobe wanted to attend school while sick, a visit from Tezuka isn’t going to stop him. The Hyoutei Regulars just scoffed.

Seeing as he wasn’t going to be making any headway in terms of convincing any of the team members that his visit was unnecessary (and unnecessarily long, as Hyoutei was an entire district away), Tezuka agreed to the demands if only because having seven Hyoutei students on Seigaku’s tennis court was interrupting afternoon practice. His own team knew better than to complain.

And that was how Tezuka found himself stepping off the bus and into Hyoutei’s obscenely large tennis club/court/spa-thing. In the middle of five hundred tennis club members stood their very sick, but very determined club president, who continued coughing orders as he kept the team moving, picking off the weaker members and putting them on ball duty. Although bleary eyed, it took no time at all for Atobe to spot Tezuka’s appearance, and by some silent command, the tennis team parted just far enough to allow Atobe make a beeline to the intruder.

“You,” Atobe’s voice was hoarse with shouting and illness, “why are you here?”

“You’re teammates were very adamant,” Tezuka replied without missing a beat. Pulling the thermos from his backpack, he handed the care package to Atobe and added, “Also, by demands of Oshitari, chicken soup.”

“I hate chicken soup,” Atobe deadpanned even as he accepted the thermos. “He knows this. Everyone knows this.”

“I don’t think he particularly cares,” Tezuka assured him.

Nose wrinkling at the utterly unsympathetic observation, Atobe screwed open the thermos and dumped a healthy portion into the top-turned-cup. Then, with a distasteful sniff, he asked, “If I drink this, will you leave my team to my misery?”

“Not likely,” Tezuka apologized with barely a shrug. “I don’t need to spend the rest of my afternoon chasing Hyoutei students off campus.”

“Well I don’t have time to chaperone you around Hyoutei either,” Atobe groused even as he drank the soup. “And that was disgusting. I’m going to kill the person who came up with the idea of chicken soup.”

“It was this or tomato juice,” Tezuka muttered as he took back the half-empty thermos, knowing better than to insist Atobe finish. He hadn’t thought Atobe was even going to concede to a single sip, so downing an entire cup without complaint was testament to just how sick the other boy really was. Tezuka wasn’t about to pile on any more misery than necessary.

They stood in silence for another stretch of time as he and Atobe watched the Hyoutei tennis team run through drills. Then, after a second round of hacking that Tezuka helped by pounding Atobe on the back until he held up his hand to signal he’s had enough, they finally left the courts to the club members. Atobe was still sniffling a bit, but managed to keep himself upright as they walked off. It wasn’t until he entered the club room that he gave into his body’s demands and promptly fell into the nearest sofa, moaning piteously.

“I hate being sick.”

“Then stop making things worse and stay home,” Tezuka admonished as he began packing up Atobe’s things. Briefly, Tezuka took a moment to be disturbed by the realization that he knew Atobe’s wardrobe well enough to pick it out from the mess that was Hyoutei’s tennis team club house, but then was distracted immediately by Atobe’s coughing.

“Are you going to walk me home?” Atobe was rasping, his voice having gotten much worse now that he was horizontal.

“I called your chauffer,” Tezuka told him in lieu of an answer. At Atobe’s scowl, he explained, “I still have a team to run and I’m not neglecting my responsibilities just because you can’t be bothered to take care of yourself.”

“Then why come at all?” Atobe moaned at him even as he took the packed bag from Tezuka’s hand.

“Because I care.”

And instantly, I feel all better! =D

Ok, maybe not quite, but I appreciate it all the same. .^_^ Thank you so much! ♥
(though personally I think Tezuka should walk Atobe home... and tuck him into bed. ;P )

My sick has moved from my throat to my nose, which is much less painful, but far more annoying. And now I sound ridiculous and nasal. Like a not cute Hikaru Midorikawa.

Behold the magical feeling of ZukaBe! XD

I'm glad you feel at least marginally better.

(I guess I should state that this is pre-slash, and Zuka and Be are still trying to find out how much they can push with one another. I like to think that it took a while for Zuka to feel comfortable completely taking over Be's life, given how ridiculous Be is about allowing someone to play nice with him, and Be's trying to figure out how much liberty he can take with Zuka's person before the guy throws him out on his ear. Of course, the answer is: a lot.)
